Race Report: Tater Bake Open

The Tater Bake Open, the 11th race in Wisconsin Off Road Series' 2007 season, drew over 550 competitors to Iola, WI on September 23rd. The Tater is the only race of the 2007 WORS series to return to a venue within a single season. The Iola Winter Sports Club also hosted the Iola Bump and Jump, WORS 2007 kick-off race on May 6. A strong case for the return trip to Iola can be made by the warm hospitality of the local organizers and by the course itself. Challenging climbs, fast descents and miles of wooded singletrack keep Iola a favorite for many series racers. Racers and spectators alike enjoyed rapid descents into the ski bowl area and yet another year of perfect weather at this fast, flowing course.

In the Hayes Disc Brakes Citizen Series races, the Youth racers were the first to hit the track at 9:30 AM. Alyson Davis (11) of Genoa City once again took the top spot among the young ladies, with a time of 33:44 for a single lap of the course. Rachael Jensen of Shell Lake WI followed to place second (38:46). For the young men, 12-year old Samuel Martz of Kewaskum WI, was first to cross the line (29:32) followed closely by Ryan Kay of Rice Lake (30:22).

In the Citizen races, Ann Holson of Manitowac once again led the ladies with a time of 1:00:48 for two laps. Alyssa Borell of Ripon WI (1:01:10), was a close second and third place went to Moriah Griesbach of Rockford IL (1:02:24, left) who sang the National Anthem for WORS racers at the beginning of the day and prior to her own race.  The Citizen men were once again led with a strong margin by Matthew Amman (46:33), ahead of second place finisher David Bender (Belvidere, 50:26).

Both of the CycleOps Sport races at the Tater were hotly contested. Paula "Holly's mom" Liske of Medford WI led the ladies with a time of 1:26:18 for 3 laps, while Sarah Huang of Kenosha followed closely behind at 1:26:37. In the men's race, Anthony DiPiazza of Kaukauna cross the line in 1:10:05, 15 seconds ahead of second place finisher Rob Fuchsteiner of Wisconsin Dells at 1:10:21.

In the Cliff Bar Comp Series race Dan Holsen of Manitowoc, WI had the best overall time of 1:26:37 for 4 laps, while Aaron McCombs of Peoria, IL crossed the line in 1:28:26 to take second.

In the ladies BelGioioso Elite race, Sara Kylander-Johnson (Trek/VW) of Duluth MN took an early lead and remained unchallenged throughout, finishing with a time of 1:33:28 for four laps. Susan Juedes (Bike Hub) followed at 1:37:36. For the men, Marko Lalonde (Gary Fisher/BKB; 1:40:44) rode to his first overall Elite WORS finish, while brother Jesse Lalonde (Gary Fisher 29/BKB; 1:40:45) finished a very close second.

Many thanks once again to the local event organizers for a great race. More photos of the event can be found online. And, as always, make sure to check out Extreme Photography.
