Subaru Cup Schedule - Let Your Voice Be Heard

*Update* You can follow the polling as we collect responses, here.

This year, the WORS Subaru Cup will host a premier, national level Pro mountain bike race, the Pro Cross Country Tour, or "Pro XCT". This is an outstanding opportunity for mountain bike racing here in the Upper Midwest; a national race of this magnitude has not been held in our region for nearly a decade.

Our goal at WORS is to provide access to a consistent, outstanding race experience for as many individuals as possible. For us, this means making the Subaru Cup a great experience for every racer. If you attend only one WORS race this year, it should be the Subaru Cup.

Below are two proposed schedules for the Subaru Cup weekend, with explanations. If you have an opinion on the schedule, please read the information below and let your voice be heard.

You can send an e-mail to us with your preference for either OPTION 1, or OPTION 2, or OPTION 3 in the subject line, to TeamWORS@gmail.com.

Update Feb 4: Because the polling has been very tight all week, and many people have viewed the schedules but not registered an opinion, we are adding an "OPTION 3": I like both equally. Send us an email with Option 3 in the subject line if you plan to be at the Subaru Cup either way. That is very valuable information for WORS, and will help us to make a better decision. We appreciate your feedback.

We will tally all votes after Monday, February 8 (one week from today).

OPTION 1

Friday: pre-ride and Super D.

Saturday: XC for Cat 2, Cat 1 and Pro. And then a big party.

Sunday: XC for Cat 3 Citizens and Juniors, and Short Track for Cat 2, 1 and Pro.

In this schedule, the Super D will be held on Friday evening at 6:30 PM.

The majority of mountain bike racers in the US fall into the "Cat 2" ability class. WORS is America's largest state mountain bike race series, and we field some of the largest Cat 2 start waves in the nation. Thus, we have further divided Cat 2 racers into recreational - "Sport" - and competitive - "COMP" - groups. However, the Subaru Cup is a national qualifier and the Cat 2 field will be unified. Cat 2 riders 40+ as well as Cat 2 Clydes and women will start at 8:00 AM on Saturday, and those Cat 2 men 39 and under will start at 10:00 AM. The Pro riders will have the spotlight between noon and 5:00 PM, and the Cat 1 (men, women and Junior X) will race at 5:00. For details on how Cat 2 COMP, Sport, Cat 1 and Pros will be scored for series points, see the very bottom of this post.

On Saturday evening, WORS will host the Subaru Cup Staff Bash. This invitation only event will feature music, refreshments, stupid bike games and more. We'd like you to be there, so please be sure to speak with any of our friendly WORS volunteers at the Subaru Cup and collect your invite.

Pros and Cons for OPTION 1:

While no plan is absolutely perfect, we think this is a good schedule. It allows time for a Short Track race for the Cat 2 racers, and our Juniors and Citizen XC races will be held at their usual time, i.e., on Sunday morning. One possible downside to this schedule, as compared to OPTION 2 (below), is that the Super D must be on Friday evening, a time slot that might limit participation for some, and limit pre-ride opportunities of the XC course for others. However, it is very likely that the XC course will be completely marked a week before the event.

OPTION 2

Friday: Pre-ride and registration.

Saturday: XC for Cat 3, Cat 1 and Pros. Super D for all. And then a big party.

Sunday: XC for Cat 2, and Short Track for Cat 1 and Pro.

The Juniors (age classes 12 and under) will be the first to race at 8:00 AM, followed by the Cat 3 Citizens. At 11:00, the Cat 1 men, women and Junior X will start. The Pros will be onstage between 1:00 and 6:00 PM.

At 6:30 PM, the Super D will begin, including an Open Category (e.g., Pros and any who care to challenge). The awards for races on Saturday would be held in conjunction with the start of the Subaru Cup Staff Bash.

Pros and Cons for OPTION 2:

We also think that this is a good schedule. It allows time for the Super D race on Saturday, and we think it would be fun to race and watch the Super D, after the Pro XC and before the party. Another potential advantage to OPTION 2 is that our Cat 2 racers - WORS most numerous group - will be able to race on Sunday, as they usually do. One possible downside to this schedule, as compared to OPTION 1 (above), is that a Cat 2 XC race on Sunday makes it unlikely that we can hold meaningful Cat 2 Short Track on the same day.

OPTION 3 - I like both equally.

Update Feb 4: Because the polling has been very tight all week, and many more people have viewed the schedule than have registered an opinion, we are adding an "OPTION 3": I like both equally. Send us an email with Option 3 in the subject line if you plan to be at the Subaru Cup either way. That is very valuable information for WORS, and would help us to make a better decision. We appreciate your feedback.

Details of the scoring for Series Racers

If you've made it this far, you are a hard-core mountain bike racing enthusiast, and we truly thank you. Here are some preliminary thoughts on how the Subaru Cup XC races will probably be scored for WORS series racers.

Cat 1 and Pro. The Cat 1 XC race at the Subaru Cup can be scored as the Belgioioso Elite series race is always scored: points according to place, regardless of how many are WORS series riders. Meanwhile, the finishing times of WORS series riders in the Pro field will be pulled out and ranked according to relative finish position. WORS will then award points for those relative finish positions as we normally do for the Cat 1/Pro series. For example, if Racer X wins the Cat 1 race, and Racer Y is the first WORS series rider to cross the line in the Pro race, they would both be awarded 200 pts.

Cat 2 Sport and COMP. The Cat 2 XC race at the Subaru Cup will contain both Sport and COMP series racers. The timing staff will award finishing points to COMP riders according to age-class finish position as normal. WORS Sport Series racers will be pulled out and ranked according to relative finish position. WORS will then award points for those relative finish positions as we normally do for the Sport series. For example, if Racer X win his age class in the Cat 2 race, and Racer Y is the first WORS Sport series rider to cross the line in his age class, they would both be awarded 200 points.

In closing...

As always, WORS is dedicated to thoughtful and responsive consideration of all feedback from our racers, and we welcome your input. Please let your voice be heard if you have a preference for either of the two schedules above.
