Cross-Country Adventure WORS Style in KewauneeNear perfect racing conditions welcomed 800 racers to the Kewaunee XC Adventure this past Sunday. Race number two of WORS 2003 sponsored by Subaru began at 9:30 in the morning with the running of the new WORS Citizen Youth Race followed by the WORS Citizen Series Race at 10:00. A total of 254 competitors tested their skill on a course that presented racers with a wide variety of terrain. The race course began with a paved climb of approximately 250 vertical feet over three quarters of a mile followed by a paved traverse across an open flat of equal distance. Dropping off the pavement racers followed a series of chicanes and whoops of hard packed clay doubletrack atv trail before arriving at the Riverview Park mountain bike trail via gravel road. The Riverview Park portion of the race course consisted of numerous ups and downs of wooded off camber singletrack, winding trail through an open field and a half pipe section through a valley approximately fifty feet deep and two hundred across. After two laps the Citizens returned pretty much the way they went out, back to the finish line at Breummer Park. Speeds in excess of forty miles per hour were recorded on the paved downhill to the finish. With competitors ranging in age from eleven to seventy years old, the fastest Citizen times of the day were turned in by twenty-six year old Rebecca Spellman from Cambridge, Wisconsin for the women and twenty-six year old Kevin Cummisford of Wauwautosa, Wisconsin for the men.
